Melanie M. (aka "Mellie") Graphic Designer Web Master Franchise Member Ghostbusters: Doom Patrol "Once again I can have a use for my web design skills, and an outlet for my love of Ghostbusters." ~Mellie A self-proclaimed military brat, Mellie was born on March 27, 1984. Like many families whose lives are intertwined with the armed forces, she is inured to change and has called home to many areas within Nova Scotia to which the majority of her upbringing was spent throughout the duration of her nomadic youth. If anyone asks where she is from, she will usually respond with: "nowhere really" or it's a long-winded story". She feels that simply stating that her family was 'military' answers many questions that regularly arise about her background. When the Real Ghostbusters Animated Series debuted, she was entranced into its cultural phenomenon. No school event was ever complete without listening to the Ray Parker Jr. megahit theme from the original motion picture. In the past, Mellie had spent many enjoyable hours at her childhood best friend's home playing Ghostbusters and often pretended to be Janine Melnitz, the feisty secretary of the 'boys in grey' and would-be-love interest of Dr. Egon Spengler. Their imagination knew no bounds, whether they were hunting imps in their backyards or chasing the gluttonous green ghost, 'Slimer', with makeshift proton packs on the school playground. As much as she loved the cartoon, she was also a fan of the first movie and its sequel. Though, she remembers being scared to death of the floating head of Vigo the Carpathian, the cantankerous and eternally deceased European dictator in Ghostbusters 2. Years passed, and for a long time, those experiences that she had left behind in childhood became nothing more than a memory. Yet as fate would have it, she was reunited with that same friend and re-flamed her passion for slime and heroics that had lain dormant within her up till adulthood. This was how she came to discover the Ghostbusters Online Fan Community. There she made many new friends whose interests matched and even exceeded her own. Though like all online communities, she found that this particular fandom was also not without its drama. But through the good times and the bad, connections were made that could never be broken. She has made life-long friends, a handful of which she has come to call family. But regardless, the Nova Scotia native knows that Ghostbusters fans will ultimately continue to share their love for the 'superstars of the supernatural'. In early 2007, Mellie found her current boyfriend online with a user name of 'Zuul' and a greeting line of "Are you the Keymaster?" stating that if one was able to name the movie that her question was a reference to, they would be one step ahead of the others toward winning her heart. He replied with a message entitled "who ya' gonna' call?" She notes that while he doesn't share her passion, he understands it, and enjoys watching both movies with her. Mellie has joined the Doom Patrol team very recently, although it feels like she has been a part of it for years. As a former member of The Canadian Ghostbusters franchise, she has shared many online hours with Doom Patrol's own Rob Smith, bouncing ideas back and forth, sharing artwork and designs. It was only natural for her CGB character to make the transition to DP. |
